This is the new entrance board for White Hall. On the heels of the “I AM Trayvon Martin” phase of our campus and the AUC, I wanted to encourage my residents to define themselves not as others, but as themselves influenced by the lives and actions of others. On the board I have various names of Black men and women who have been influential in their own way - from the deceased Sean Bell, Troy Davis, and Trayvon Martin, to living legends such as Barack and Michelle Obama. My goal is for this to be a conversation starter, not only about the influence of some of the lesser known names present on the board, but also about the future my residents want to make for themselves and their communities.

Suicide is the leading cause of death for youth aged 15 to 24 years old. LGB youth are up to 4 times more likely to commit suicide than their heterosexual peers.

This is the impetus for my program ”LGBTQ & You.” This program took a look at suicide rates within the African American community in general and suicide rates of LGB youth of color. The goal was then to focus on the action’s of ourselves that contribute to these devastating statistics - and inherently the suicidal thoughts many Men of Morehouse may be experiencing. The program also featured attendance from students of Spelman College and Clark Atlanta University.

Program was sponsored by the Faces of Manhood Initiative.

If we end black history month, do we end black history? Are serious, yea we do! Really?! On February 15, 2012, a flyer was posted on a residence hall building at Morehouse College which read, “End Black History Month.” Above the flyer was a picture of Morehouse alum, Martin Luther King, Jr. and beside him are black and gold letters that read, “More Than A Month.” By the next morning, students began to gather in front of the flyer to discuss the significance of Black History Month. Some students were shocked that such a blasphemous flyer would be posted on the Morehouse College campus. Well it was and the flyer was much needed.

On February 22, 2012, the film More Than A Month was screened to a crowd of more than 30 students from Morehouse College, Spelman College, and Clark Atlanta University. The PBS Community Cinema documentary, More Than A Month explores the ideas of the importance of Black History Month and its significance. Following the screening of More Than A Month there was a panel discussion which included Dr. Yohnace Murray, Morehouse professor, Addison De Moss ,Morehouse Student, and Tasha Bullock, Spelman student. The dialogue was amazing! Some students agreed with filmmaker Shukree Hassan Tilghman initiative to end Black History Month. For example, Robertson Bassy, Morehouse freshman, stated that it is ridiculous to believe that Carter G. Woodson only fought to have Black History Month recognized for one month. If he began at a week and then moved to a month then what was his third step? Mr. Bassy believes that there has to be a progression. However, he was one of the minorities who believed such. The majority of students felt that More Than A Month was a slap in the face to the pioneers of Black History and Black History Month.

The film has opened the flood gates of the masses to voice their opinions and concerns about Black History Month and for that reason alone we thank Mr. Shukree Hassan Tilghman. More Than A Month is a amazing film and we need more filmmakers like Shukree Hassan Tilghman who are willing to question the norms of society in a revolutionary way.
